AI, Liability & Insurance – A Review of the First Hanoverian Interdisciplinary Conference

Artificial intelligence has long ceased to be a topic of the future. With its increasing prevalence, technical, regulatory, and liability challenges are growing – including in the legal sector.

The first Hanoverian interdisciplinary conference, held on May 8, 2025, addressed the continuously highly topical issues surrounding the use of AI. It was organized by the Interdisciplinary Institute for Automated Systems (RifaS) together with the Faculty of Law at Leibniz University Hanover, at the premises of Hannover Re SE.

In addition to Hannover Re SE, the conference was also supported by Dr. Krafczyk und Partner Rechtsanwälte mbB and Luther Rechtsanwaltsgesellschaft mbH. The conference was moderated by Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Bernd H. Oppermann.

The speakers – Luca Willnow, Dr. Dr. Hans Steege, Prof. Dr. Heinz-Uwe Dettling, Prof. Dr. Jan Eichelberger, Marieke Mattern, and Dr. Jan-Philipp Günther-Burmeister – as distinguished experts from academia and practice, delivered exciting and insightful presentations at the event.

The program was rounded out by a panel discussion led by Joerg Heidrich, featuring Prof. Dr. Heinz-Uwe Dettling, Dr. Julia Perl, and Luca Willnow, as well as an intensive concluding discussion with the participants.

Moana Wittich summarizes the key contents and discussion results in the conference report "First Hanoverian Interdisciplinary Conference AI – Liability – Insurance." Now available to read in the Journal for Digitalization and Law (ZfDR) 2026, 155-162

Special thanks also go to the co-authors: Viktor Klyk, Antonia Stuchlik, Marieke Mattern, Dr. Jan-Philipp Günther-Burmeister, as well as all those who contributed to the success of this valuable event.
